General Details

David Reedy – Tenor

David Reedy has a wide musical experience as a tenor and actor in opera, operetta and music theatre. David was born in Forbes, NSW. He began singing at an early age. He was taught singing, piano and violin by the Sisters of Mercy. David’s voice training has involved a number of important people in his life. There were two main voice teachers in his early training. The first was Madam Lanz, who was principal singer with the Bolshoi Opera and an exponent of the Russian School. The second was David Parker AO (who had been a student of Herbert-Caesari whose informative book The Voice of the Mind (1951) and other works helped revive the Bel Canto singing method). David has also worked with conductors Sir Bernard Heinze, Joseph Post and Marie Van Hove OAM; pianists Geoffrey Parsons and Thomas Vasary; and accompanist Colin Forbes. These people have had a profound effect on David’s musical career and have seriously influenced his teaching method.

David was a graduate of the New South Wales Conservatorium of Music Opera School under Ronal Jackson OA, baritone. During this time David sang with the Elizabethan Opera (now Opera Australia). Later, as a member of the ABC Federal Concerts Department with responsibility for the presentation of youth concerts, he personally gave many opera performances in regional centres, schools and colleges throughout Australia. He was also a recitalist for the ABC on a number of occasions and a soloist with the Arts Council of Australia and the ACT Lieder Society.

David has played numerous operatic roles. They include Tamino in The Magic Flute, Rudolfo in La Bohème, Mario Cavaradossi in Tosca, Rodolfo in La Bohème, and Manrico in Il Trovatore. Highlights include Pirelli in the Australian premiere of Sweeney Todd, and Mr By-Ends in the Australian premiere of Ralph Vaughan Williams’ Pilgrims Progress. He also has appeared in the title role of Faust, in Romeo and Juliet, The Marriage of Figaro, Acis and Galatea, and as Mr Bumble in Alpha Theatres’ production of Oliver. Also he sang the role of Lord Tollolier for both CAMRA and Queanbeyan productions of Iolanthe, and the Duke of Dunstable in CAMRA’s Patience.

In 2009, David undertook the title role of Tito the Emperor of Rome in Mozart’s La Clemenza di Tito. His last ACT operatic performance was singing the title role in abridged performance of Rigoletto for Canberra Opera Inc.

As well as performing, David has gained recognition as a voice teacher and adjudicator. He was the Founder and Artistic Director of the Canberra opera Workshop. His formation of the Canberra Opera Workshop, to provide career opportunities for young singers, was a dream realised. It now continues as Canberra Opera Inc.
David has also travelled widely visiting major opera houses and attending master classes around the world. His students are contributing to the Canberra, Australian and international musical scene. He was nominated for an Australian of the year award in 2014.
