Duth-born drummer, Frans Kat has had a long standing involvement with a variety of drumming styles. He currently performs regularly with the group “Sun of Africa” with renown and highly talented, African dancer and drummer Jean-Marc Agbogba.
In 2007 Frans began an intensive study of African rhythms. He has since performed with a number of notable African musicians such as Karamba Cissoko and his group Seneoz, Dada Nii and his ‘Damushi Ensemble’, Bortier Okoe’s ‘African Soul’, and with Ziggy Mabeye Diagne and Abli Laryea.
Frans’ earliest drumming experience began with Brass Bands at the age of eleven. He gave his first solo performance singing and drumming aged 12 on MTN 9 television in Griffith N.S.W.
He continued playing and began teaching the side drum while rising to the level of Drum Major with N.B.H.S. Cadet Band, the Newcastle Army Reserve Brass Band and as drum Major with the Bathurst Highland Pipes and Drums. He also played kit drums in small jazz and rock groups.
Frans is a skilled and patient teacher of the African Djembe and dunduns (or bass drums)and his passion for West African music is very evident in his approach to teaching.
