Bachelor of Music (Improvisation) - VCA
Gareth Thomson is a drummer and producer based in Brunswick, Australia. As a certified instructor, Gareth is dedicated to helping students achieve their full potential by practicing hard and having fun.
Gareth heads a thriving Percussion program at The Mac.Robertson Girls’ High School and keeps a busy roster of students at his private teaching studio. He sees the drums as a means of expression and enjoyment, and he structures his lessons around these principles. By developing core skills that cover a wide range, his students learn conceptually and comprehensively so that they become the best musicians they can be.
He has toured and recorded with a wide variety of artists including Sex On Toast, Lakyn Heperi, the Victorian Opera, Elana Stone, Kate Kelsie-Sugg (Melbourne Music Prize winner), and Bar McKinnon (ex-Mr Bungle) to name a few. In 2013, he was the recipient of two Australia Council grants, which funded study with over a dozen of the world’s most renown drummers. Whilst travelling between New York, New Orleans, and Los Angeles, he studied with Dave Elitch, Chris Coleman, Mark Guiliana, John Riley, and more. He holds a Bachelor of Music from the Victorian College of the Arts, where he studied extensively with Simon Barker, Dave Beck and Graham Morgan.
Gareth currently acts as drummer and producer for Sex On Toast, a 9-piece outfit specialising in 1980’s synth-funk, horn-driven blue-eyed soul and raw improvisation. Sex On Toast has been growing since its inception as a high school band to headlining major festivals including Woodford Folk Festival, Lost Paradise Festival, Melbourne International Jazz Festival and Falls Festival, both in Australia and New Zealand.
Gareth is proud to be an official endorsee of Yamaha Drums, and plays a variety of vintage and modern Yamaha kits.
He always enjoys taking on new students and is open for appointments.
“Endlessly inventive” – Jessica Nicholas, The Age
“He is really terrific… I recommend him highly.” – Richard Gill, Victorian Opera
“One of the most talented musicians I have had the pleasure of performing with. An outstanding percussionist by any standard.” – Dr Tony Gould
“Before I’d had any lessons with Gareth, my approach to drumming lacked any solid foundation in technique and my practice time on the kit lacked structure. I found myself running through the same routine of things I’d learnt a long time ago and I was unsure of where to start next or how to approach different things that I’d seen other drummers do. Over a long period of time, there was not much growth. After a few lessons with Gareth I saw huge improvements in technique and I was made a lot more conscious of how to practice effectively at home in order to feel more comfortable and confident behind the kit. Gareth’s the sort of teacher who will find out what you like about the drum kit and will work with you to help you achieve the sound that YOU want as a drummer.
I began lessons with Gareth as I wanted to audition for the BA of Jazz and Improvisation at VCA (The University of Melbourne). My lessons began in July and continued til’ my audition in November of 2015. In such a short amount of time (5 months) I improved well beyond what my expectations were and I was successfully accepted into the VCA. Gareth’s an experienced musician with a wealth of knowledge and an eager approach to teaching. He’s perceptive, helpful and a really friendly guy. I could not recommend him enough.” – Paul, age 25
“Gareth combines a patient and relaxed approach with a sharp technical know-how and extensive drumming experience to make his lessons the perfect package. Whether you’re just getting started or you’re already performing at a professional level, I would highly recommend Gareth to help you get to the next level.” – Josh, age 30
“Gareth is a friendly, flexible and enthusiastic teacher. His patient and easygoing nature means that learning is done at your own pace in a supportive environment. His knowledge spans across a wide range of drumming styles, which ensures there’s something for everyone, young and old. I particularly enjoyed his ability to incorporate contemporary rock drumming into ways I could relate to in learning style that best suited me. A mixture of technical skills development and learning beats of my own choice meant that during the 10-week course my drumming improved in leaps and bounds. Lessons are structured around what YOU want to get out of them, making them productive, affordable and FUN at the same time.” – Thea, age 25
“Darcy commenced drum lessons with Gareth last year and really looks forward to every lesson. He feels comfortable with Gareth and is always excited with what he has achieved after each lesson. I’m really pleased that Darcy is able to learn an instrument with someone so patient and encouraging.” – Kate, parent of Darcy, age 6
“I look forward to each lesson with Gareth. When I couldn’t continue lessons with my first teacher, I didn’t think I would be able to find someone as good as him. However, my lessons have turned out to be in depth and motivating. He has given me deeper insights into my technique by teaching me what I’m interested in, not just textbook. He has exposed me to different drummers and has guided me through different styles of drumming which are both interesting and inspiring.” – Oliverio, age 13
