B. MusPerf (VCA), V. MusPerf Hons (VCA)
I am a drummer and drum-teacher based in Melbourne’s inner North. Whilst my main specialisation and focus is in Jazz and Improvised music, I have extensive performance experience in a wide range of styles.
I graduated from the Victorian College of the Arts with First-Class Honours in 2011, and am currently (2017) in my last year of a PhD through the Sydney Conservatorium of Music.
I am or have been a member of many of Australia’s best contemporary Jazz ensembles, such as The Eugene Ball Quartet, Andrea Keller’s Transient Trios, The Marc Hannaford Trio (Bell and APRA award winner), The Paul Williamson Quintet, The Joe O’Connor Trio, Tamara Murphy’s Spirograph Studies and more. I also regularly perform solo, and lead or co-lead a variety of ensembles include All Talk, Blind Spot and Lightly Toasted.
As a teacher I have experience tutoring a wide range of ages, experience levels and interests, having worked at primary schools, high schools and tertiary institutions. I have the knowledge required to ensure a beginner, young or old, builds a strong musical and technical foundation with the aim of getting you ready to play music!
Alternatively, if you’re a more advanced student, then I can offer expert knowledge related to the broad field of Jazz drumming. As well as extensive performance experience, I have undertaken private study with many of Australia’s greatest Jazz drummers – such as Simon Barker, Graham Morgan and Dave Beck – as well many great American Jazz drummers – such as the inimitable Jimmy Cobb (the drummer on Miles Davis’ Kind of Blue!), Clarence Penn, Tom Rainey, Jim Black and John Hollenbeck.
