Having recently moved to Brisbane from Northern California, Jim Frink is emerging as a versatile drummer and music educator.
Jim began playing the piano at age 4 and the drums at age 9. During high school, he played in his school jazz bands and the local university’s (UC Davis) big band. He was honoured with the Don Brewer Music Award and the Louis Armstrong Jazz Award. At age 18, he was accepted into the Monterey Jazz Festival’s Next Generation Jazz Orchestra, with which he toured Japan.
While attending university in Santa Cruz, California, Jim studied music with George Marsh, Stan Poplin and Ray Brown. Some of the venues and festivals that Jim has performed at include the Monterey Jazz Festival, Kutchan Jazz Festival, San Jose Jazz Festival, and the Kuumbwa Jazz Center. He’s performed in diverse situations ranging from jazz and funk groups, to singer-songwriter and Top 40 cover bands, to classical ensembles and musicals.
In addition to performing, Jim enjoys being involved with music education. He has several years of teaching experience and spent the last year in New Zealand teaching drumming.
