I have had considerable professional experience as a Brass & Woodwind Music Educator —with some of my past students reaching high distinctions in bands, or as solo artists. (eg, Trumpeter Eamon McNelis who won 2010 ABC Jazz Awards, was one of my students, and I taught saxophonist, Wilbur Wilde the elements of Jazz Improvisation)
• Bachelor of Education (Melbourne University)
• B.A in Jazz Performance (LaTrobe University).
• Studied 4 years Master Classes & Music Workshops with American Jazz Greats, including Hal Galper, Randy Brecker, Dave Liebman, Jamey Aebersold, Freddie Hubbard, Nat Adderley, Woody Shaw & others.
I have always combined teaching with the professional practice of music – as band-leader, arranger, composer and working trumpeter – and I feel that this brings vitality and current industry knowledge to the aspiring or experienced musicians I teach or mentor.
I have performed in many professional bands across genres, and still lead and perform in two – a jazz quintet (JMQ) and 13 piece soul music orchestra (Grand WaZoo), and occasional Big Band (Cafe Society Orchestra). I have a proven capacity to nurture and bring out the best in students and professional musicians. I also have the capacity to arrange material for all levels of skill, from beginners to university music examinations.
I am available for Instrumental Music Teaching for individual students, Tutoring, Lecturing and also for Specialist Workshops & Masterclasses in Jazz Performance ; The Elements of Arranging; Practical Improvisation, Band Leader & MD Skills, Creating Horn Section Voicings etc.
