BA Creative Arts - Performance, Graduate Diploma of Speech and Language Communication
Lara has been teaching singing for over 10 years. She has had a variety of students in that time, ranging from ages as young as 3 through to ladies in their 60’s. Lara is passionate about teaching, and thrives on watching the transition and progress of her students.
Lara focusses on combining both technique and meaning of a song to bring out the best in the performer. As every person has different objectives and voices, each student is catered to individually. In addition, Lara brings her own performance experience to her lessons to help create not only a great singing technique, but also a comprehensive, confident, and individual performance style.
Lara teaches a variety of genres, such as musical theatre, pop, contemporary, and jazz. With extensive training in musical theatre and classical, Lara has been enabled to adapt to any genre. She has also received training for performance from speech pathologists and voice coaches, and in addition has undertaken studies in speech and language communication and pathology. Her focus on vocal health and care is therefore also paramount in her teaching.
Lara grew up in the Southern Highlands of NSW, surrounded by music. Lara participated in her first musical “Oliver” when she was 8, and from there it was love. Dabbling in violin, guitar and piano for a number of years, it was singing that permeated. Juggling school life with singing lessons, music nights, vocal groups, choirs and musicals, Lara was always busy. She performed in musicals such as “Annie”, “The King and I”, “Into The Woods”, “Godspell”, “Pippin” and “Evie and The Birdman”, for which she won Best Actress In A Musical at the CAT Awards.
Beyond school, Lara continued her love of singing. She spent a year studying musical theatre at the Australian Institute of Music, followed by a Bachelor of Creative Arts (Performance) at the University of Wollongong. Here Lara studied classical technique, and voice studies under speech pathologists that enabled her to expand her skills to the best she could be. During these years of training, she worked with and met numerous actors, singers, teachers, directors, coaches and musicians who helped to create the performer and teacher she is today. While studying, Lara taught singing and piano, and performed both in and out of university, at wedding ceremonies, in acoustic duos, for DJ Vocals in pubs and clubs, for graduation ceremony entertainment, and in art spaces and galleries.
After completing her degree, Lara decided to take a break and travelled the world. Upon returning from overseas, Lara settled in Sydney. From here, her musical life has seen her work extend consistently as an acoustic duo artist, trio singer, band front singer for weddings, corporate and function bands, backing vocalist, recording and live vocalist for a selection of DJ’s including Lancelot and Klue, session singer for a variety of advertising campaigns, as a contributor to Bondi Hipsters second hit single “Out In Space”, and as a member of corporate entertainers “The Margaritas”.
To complement her undergraduate studies, Lara has since completed a Diploma in Speech and Language Communication, and has also undertaken study in Speech Pathology.
In 2016, Lara relocated to the Byron Bay region, and is currently building a network of new singing students. Lara offers lessons from her residence in Ewingsdale, and also travels to students’ homes if more convenient.
