Michael Avgenicos has recently completed his Bachelor of Music in Jazz Performance at the Sydney Conservatorium of Music where he majored in saxophone. He achieved his Associate of Music from the Australian Music Examinations Board in 2010 and has been featured as a finalist in James Morrison’s Generations in Jazz Scholarship in Mount Gambier, South Australia in 2013. Michael has also achieved numerous scholarships and awards as a student: all are testament to his skill and dedication as a performer. Michael is a formidable musician despite his relative youth.

Michael currently leads and composes for his Sydney based sextet with his brother, Thomas, and features on album recordings with the Dave Panichi Big Band and Divergence Jazz Orchestra’s The Opening Statement (2013). Michael has been involved in notable performances with Judy Bailey’s Jazz Connection, Evan Lohning Jazz Orchestra, Sonic Mayhem Orchestra, and Ross Irwin’s Invitational All Star Big Band in venues all around Australia and abroad. Michael is also a member of emerging improvisational electronic group Lightcycle, and is featured as a soloist with the Frances Madden band and Gregg Arthur group.

Michael has experience teaching students from primary and high school. He focuses on technique and overall musicianship, and loves to teach composition, jazz and improvisation on the saxophone. He is also happy to take students through AMEB exams if they wish.
