Michael Murray - Concert Pianist - MMus, LMusA

General Details

M.Mus (Master of Music in classical performance), L.Mus.A, A.Mus.A

Although Michael was introduced to the piano at an early age, it was not until the age of fifteen that he developed an interest in piano. With only a pass in grade two piano at the time, he began serious study of the instrument. Three years later in 1997, he became the selected pianist amongst high schools throughout Sydney to play at the Sydney Opera House, where he performed his own rendition of Liszt’s Hungarian Rhapsody No. 15.

Being inspired by the Russian pianist Arcadi Volodos’ and his 1997 “Piano Transcriptions” CD, he proceeded to learn by ear, note by note, Vladimir Horowitz’s transcription of Liszt’s Hungarian Rhapsody No. 2. At that time there was no score available, so transcribing by ear was the only option. Michael’s interest in arrangements and transcription continues to this day. Michael later undertook study at the University of New South Wales in a Bachelor of Music.

Without completing any further piano grades after two, Michael went on to receive his A.Mus.A and L.Mus.A in piano from the AMEB. He also received awards in various competitions, most recent being Highly Commended in the 2012 KAWAI Open (Sydney Eisteddfod).

Michael completed his Master of Music in classical piano performance at the Australian Institute of Music in 2017, studying with Dr Suzanna Hlinka. He has also participated in Dr Wojciech Wisniewski’s masterclasses and performed in the public masterclasses of Prof. Alexey Sokolov and Prof. Inge Rosar. In 2016 he was invited to adjudicate, along with Dr. Kirill Monorossi and Carl Schmidtt, in the ACASEA International Piano Competition in Sydney.

Michael has over eight years teaching experience and is committed to providing fine detail in technique and interpretation.l
