Nick Pietsch is a freelance trombonist based in Melbourne. He graduated with Honours in Jazz Performance from the University of Adelaide, winning the award for the Most Outstanding Jazz Undergraduate of 2009. He has performed with artists as diverse as Natalie Cole, John Morrison, Kate Cebrano, Jim Pugh and Bob Mintzer. He currently performs around Australia with Hilltop Hoods – as well as featuring on their 2012 release “Drinking From the Sun” – and performs regularly with Melbourne acts including Horns of Leroy and Flap. He was recently a finalist in the National Jazz Awards at Wangaratta. He has extensive experience teaching trombone, from instructing beginners through to running Jazz masterclasses at the University of Adelaide. He specialises in improvisation in a range of styles as well as teaching jazz and modern theory and harmony.
