Percussive was launched in 2013 and is run by Dr Andrew Stapleton, PhD. Originally from the UK, Andy has been learning and performing Brazilian/Latin percussion since the age of 11 after he joined his high school samba band. Andy quickly became familiar with traditional and contemporary Brazilian rhythms taught to him by various directors. This lead to Andy becoming the musical director of the community samba band Jam Samba, in Plymouth UK. Andy has also been the assistant director of Samba Tawe, in Swansea Wales, and the founder of many school groups while working for The Music Zone in Plymouth.
Since moving to Australia in 2007, Andy has performed with Repercussion, Samba Frog and Chunky Salsa, Newcastle NSW and Sambasi in Adelaide. He is currently the appointed musical director of SaSamba, Adelaide’s Community Samba Band and has been a percussionist for African dance group, Sun of Africa. Andy’s performances include segments on Radio, TV and appearances at festivals, such as the Big Green Gathering, Notting Hill Carnival, Sydney’s Mardi Gras parade and Adelaide’s Fringe and WOMADelaide.
Andy brings together many years’ experience of teaching and performing to create fun and interactive workshops suitable for all ages.
