Learning theory ensures a more in-depth understanding of practical playing and helps to create a well-rounded musician. For those wishing to take practical exams of a high level, achievement in theory exams are a pre-requisite.

Theory can be taught to beginners, with books that accompany their practical course, or can also follow the AMEB syllabus. It is recommended that leson times are increased to give time to both theory and practical elements, with 45mins being the minimum time to cover both.
