Associate of Music Australia
Robert Smith A.Mus.A
I first picked up the guitar in 1959. My first teacher was a keyboard player, my second teacher was a saxophone player and finally after 2 years I found a guitar teacher.
I spent most of the sixties playing in rock n roll cover bands, playing all the top 40 songs of the day. In the early seventies I started studying classical guitar and received a scholarship to study full time at the Newcastle conservatorium.
I continued to play in cover bands during the seventies, in particular I was the lead guitarist in the resident band for the Newcastle Workers Club.
In the eighties and nineties I concentrated on my classical playing and formed the Hunter Valley Guitar Society of which I was president for 10 years. This gave me the opportunity to study with many of the top guitarists from around the world including John Williams, Ruben Riera, the Assad Brothers, Julian Bysantine, Timothy Cain, Ken Burns and Greg Pickler.
The new century has revived my interest in performing and I have formed an instrumental cover band performing in local venues and nostalgia events.
Of course, my love of teaching has kept me busy for the past 40 years and continues to be my priority. Many of my students have achieved university level accreditation and have made music their career.
