Writing songs can be an amazingly therapeutic and satisfying process. Some lucky people even make a living out of it. This workshop is designed to help you develop the instincts that will guide you towards becoming a songwriter, starting with how to “read” a song and discover what makes it tick. Looking at material from the likes of Bob Dylan, Tom Waits, Elton John and others, you will emerge with a richer appreciation of the songwriters craft, as well as a host of practical tips to help you on your way.
The workshop is taught by Luke Escombe, one of Sydney’s most exciting and original singer-songwriters. Luke began his music career in London as a session guitarist before moving to Sydney in 1999 to get away from the cold. Since then he has captained a 10-piece conceptual funk band, toured Tasmania with a comedy folk trio, been a featured artist with World Vision, written essays for the Sydney Morning Herald and won numerous accolades and awards for his unique way with words. He has recently been recording his debut solo album in Byron Bay, and plays regular gigs around Sydney at venues such as the Vanguard and the Basement. When he’s not playing music he tutors HSC students in English literature.
