The cello is one of our most popular instruments – and it’s no wonder… its rich deep tones are romantic, sensual, evocative – truly warm vibrations. The solo repertoire, from Jacqueline Du Pre’s remarkable Elgar Cello Concerto to Yo Yo Ma’s Bach Suites, is to die for. (Besides, the instrument looks wonderful propped in the corner of the living room.)
The cello is a relatively easy instrument to begin on. There’s no awkward breathing or tiring position to maintain. But for those with some experience you can pick it up where you left off. It’s not quite like riding a bicycle – but at least you can’t fall off.
Beginners
For beginners it’s simple, we’ll start with the basics, tuning the cello and preparing yourself and the instrument to be played. By the end of ten weeks you’ll be able to play simple melodies on all four strings, read simple music and understand basic musical and cellistic terms.
Experienced Cellists
For those with some experience we will need to assess your abilities and place you in an appropriate group. This can be done by phoning us on 9211 7055 and talking to Gillian about your history and experience.
Chamber Music
To test just how in demand cellists always are you might like to join a Chamber Music group and play with violins, recorders, harpsichords or other cellos. The glorious repertoire of chamber music stretches from Vivaldi to the Renaissance to more challenging contemporary arrangements of Frank Zapper and Philip Glass.
