The flute really is a magical instrument. It has a uniquely ethereal tone that brings a touch of wistful beauty to the world whether it’s played in a jazz group, a full orchestra or alone in a field. It’s the instrument you can pick up and blow for the first time knowing you won’t clear the room and you might even receive a compliment. Practicing won’t result on thumps on the wall from the neighbours or howls of agony from the rest of your household, and that’s magical too. And if you practice, progress is swift.

Flute Courses
Courses at The Music Practice cover everyone from total beginners to flautists of all levels of ability and experience.

The Magic Flute 1
This course is for those who have never touched a flute or those that once learned to play but would like to go back to the fundamentals. By the end of ten weeks you’ll be able to play a number of simple tunes with a good even tone. You’ll be able to read music too and be able too add expression to what you’re playing by employing phrasing, tempo and dynamics.

The Magic Flute (Advanced)
As your skills improve you can move into groups with more advanced abilities. Here you will continue to build on your technical skills as well as having the opportunity to play more difficult music with the group.

Tutor
Steve Meyer B.Mus.A (SCM), L.Mus.A
Steve holds a Bachelor of Music from the Sydney Conservatorium and graduated with the highest mark in his year for performance. Steve’s teachers have included John Freeland, Michael Scott and James Kortum he has studied in masterclass with William Bennett, Patrick Gallois, Susan Milan and Robert Winn. In 1997 Steve was the 1st prize winner of the NSW Flute Society championship and a 3 time 2MBS FM young performer. Steve plays freelance with many Sydney orchestras including Opera Australia and, as a soloist, he has appeared with the Sydney Conservatorium Orchestra and the Orchestre de Caledonie in Noumea. In recital Steve has premiered various new works by composers including Ross Edwards, Jean Francaix and Kaija Saariaho. Steve has over 12 years teaching experience and was Head of Woodwind at the International College of Music Education.
