Ad Dip mus, VCE mus (A+ student), up n coming drummer finalist 99 +2000, Real world experience., Cert IV training + assess
My lessons are tailored to each student and are both informative and practical. My main focus is getting you to a point where you can play in a band as quickly as possible. I also make sure that the student thoroughly understands their instrument and its roll in real world situations. I insist on all students learning to read. Reading is actually quite easy when explained right. My ‘teach a man to fish’ approach to teaching allows the student and I to work together in developing their skills and direction.
As a musician with a heavy performing schedule, I don’t need to teach to supplement my income. Then why do I teach? I teach because I love it! I have a gift for communication and inspiration. I believe it is important not only to give a student skills to drum, it is equally important to give the student the inspiration and confidence to express themselves musically. In fact, quite often students inspire me with their creativity. Many of my students have gone on to study music and are now themselves full time musicians.
So whats my story?
I began drumming 25 years ago at the age of ten. Within 6 months, I was gigging every weekend playing swing music, orchestral percussion and marching snare drum. I went on to complete VCE music featuring an A+ on my solo performance exam. I then studied at Box Hill Tafe for three years. Since then I have never been out of work. I played a lot of jazz in my 20’s, but now in my 30’s I play a lot more rock and blues. I have played festivals all across Australia with many of Australia’s best musicians, but name droppings not my style.
My teaching career began at the age of 13. That amounts to over 22 years of teaching experience. I have taught at a number of music schools, high schools and primary schools, but now I like to teach from home. I have come across all manner of students with a wide variety of learning styles. I assure you, I know how to get that information into you head and how to make it stick. Above all I believe learning should be a positive experience! Be prepared to laugh and have the occasional improvised jam!
The best way to contact me is by email as my performing scheduled makes phone answering tricky sometimes.
