Alex Barker

Greetings :)

My name is Alex Barker, I am a drummer and professional musician based in Perth, WA. I mostly perform in the CBD and the Greater Perth area and I also offer one-on-one tuition for drum kit out of my home studio in North Perth!

I'm excited to offer my services to anyone who would like to learn to play their favourite songs, learn the basics of an instrument, as well as those who wish to further their technique under the guidance of a Waapa-trained professional musician.

My background:

I started learning the guitar at age 9, but when I jumped on a drum kit for the first time at age 11 I knew I’d found my instrument.

I played and wrote music right through high school in stage bands, original projects with my friends, and in my Dad’s DIY recording studio.

After high school I began writing, performing and touring on the east coast of Australia, all the while building my business Alex Barker Drum Tuition.

In 2012 I left behind my business and network in Wollongong to undertake a Ba in Music Performance at the WA Academy of Performing Arts, which I completed in 2015.

After planting roots and performing professionally throughout my degree, I decided to set up shop in Perth. Some of my highlights over the last seven years include performing March Snare at the 2021 AFL Grand Final, performing The Boy From Oz at Crown Theatre and working with many of Perth’s finest musicians, composers, producers, play-writes and engineers.

Teaching experience:

2021-ongoing - drum tutor at St George’s Anglican Grammar, Perth.

2017-2022 - guitar and drum tutor at Sacred Heart PS, Good Shepherd PS and Lumen Christi College, Martin.

2017-18 - drum tutor at St John's and St Dominic's PS through Keyed Up Music.

2016-19 - drum and guitar tutor at Kalamunda Music Academy.

2016-17 - drum tutor at Sound Centre, Morley.

2016 - drum tutor at St Helena's Catholic College, Ellenbrook.

2009-12 - drum tutor to 40+ private students as well as through St Mary's Star Of The Sea College, Corpus Christi Catholic High School, and tuition business The Music Bus (drums, guitar, keyboard) in NSW.

2009-12 - childcare worker for Big Fat Smile (formally Illawarra Children's Services), Wollongong NSW.

My career as a performer has taken me from venues in Coolum (QLD) to the famous Esplanade Hotel in Melbourne (VIC) supporting such artists as Dragon, The Whitlams, Guttermouth, NOFX, Illy, Phrase, GZA (Wu-Tang Clan), The Herd and Bliss N Eso to name a few.
