My lessons are split into 4 areas; Physical (stretching and warmups), Technical (left hand/right hand position, coordination, tone, touch and dynamics), Theoretical (scales, chords, their relationship, aural, rhythm) Creative (putting songs together through chunking parts and putting theory into practice). I expect students to set 3-5 songs they want to learn as a goal, and I then base the the lessons and roadmap for learning based of these song choices.
I also use the first lesson (free) to assess your skill level and discuss how you’ve learned other skills in the past to understand how you learn. This is critical, if I don’t can’t understand how you learn, how will we keep you engaged and motivated? It’s also important that we gel, and you get a service you’re happy with. Although 1 lesson probably isn’t the best measure, it’s generally enough to assess whether our teaching learning relationship is going to be one that suits you and your music goals.
