I'm Andrew Fong, a multi-instrumentalist that has been teaching clarinet, saxophone and piano for the past 8 years. I started teaching in Townsville where I grew up, then in Melbourne where I studied a Bachelor of Music at Melbourne University and then at the Australian National Academy of Music with the Professional Performance Program. (If you'd like to find out more about my qualifications please feel free to navigate to my bio on this website.)
During my time in Melbourne I was lucky enough to study with inspiring clarinet pedagogues such as Paul Dean (Former Queensland Symphony Orchestra Principal Clarinet and current head of winds at Queensland Conservatorium) and David Griffiths (prominent chamber musician and clarinet lecturer at Melbourne University) during my time at university and David Thomas (Principal Clarinet of Melbourne Symphony Orchestra) during my time at ANAM. This is on top of many incredible lessons with some of what I consider to be the best clarinettists in the world such as Michael Collins, Thorsten Johanns, Dimitri Ashkenazy, Phillip Arkinstall and Justin Beere.
I've been lucky to have had performance opportunities with Australian World Orchestra, Australian Youth Orchestra in an international Tour (2019), Melbourne Symphony Orchestra, Orchestra Victoria, Victorian Opera and will continue performing with Queensland Symphony Orchestra and the Southern Cross Soloists during my time in Brisbane.
During my six years studying in Melbourne I've been a member of a Wind Quintet each year and performed all the core repertoire extensively. In addition to this I've performed as a part of chamber orchestras, clarinet trios, clarinet quintets, and many other ensembles of varied instrumentation. In these ensembles I've received chamber music coaching from world class chamber musicians such as Howard Penny (Cello, Chamber Orchestra of Europe), Timothy Young (Piano, Ensemble Liason), Michael Collins (Clarinet), Hansjörg Schellenberger (Oboe), Diana Doherty (Oboe), Bridget Bolliger (Flute) and many others. In addition I've been lucky enough to perform alongside musicians of that calibre such as Francesca Hiew (Australian String Quartet), Thorsten Johanns (Clarinet), Ole Kristian Dahl (Bassoon), Stefan Dohr (Horn), Lyndon Watts (Bassoon) and Nick Deutsch (Oboe).
In my move to Brisbane to live with my partner I was sad to have to leave my former students behind. Now that I'm in Brisbane I would love to have the opportunity to pass on all of the knowledge, excitement and experience that music has offered me throughout my career. I would be able to coach chamber music for any instrumentation and have an intimate knowledge of wind chamber music. I have a lot of flexibility with my schedule and would be happy to offer one off sessions as well as continuing coaching.
I'm based in Kangaroo Point but will also be spending a lot of time in Spring Hill. I'm happy to travel to coach throughout the Brisbane area. If you're at all interested or have any questions feel free to contact me on 0423277464 or firstname.lastname@example.org
Congratulations for making it to the end of this wall of text and I hope to hear from you soon!
