Benjamin Shannon is making a serious indent into the Australian music scene as a percussionist, educator and composer. Hailing from Maroochydore on the Sunshine Coast, Ben began lessons under the guidance of Luke Williams (Dead Letter Circus) at age 10.

Throughout his early teenage years Ben began performing in a multitude of styles with local groups; Sunshine Brass and South Brisbane Federal Brass Band were the impetus for Ben’s early musical development and spearheaded his progression. Ben played in various original projects from a young age, varying from indie rock, classical, funk and brass band, all through to heavy metal.

Ben has studied with world renowned percussionists Mark Guiliana (David Bowie) Dave Elitch, (The Mars Volta, Justin Timberlake, The 1975) Jeff Friedl, (A Perfect Circle, Puscifer) Steve Judd (Karnivool, The Veronicas) Thomas Pridgen (The Mars Volta) Tim Firth, Andrew Gander, Simon Barker, John Parker and Paul Hudson just to name a few.

Ben’s style can be described as a concoction of influences and genres representative in the way he performs and approaches music. Having played at festivals such as Riverfire, Caloundra Music Festival, Caxton Street Festival, Homegrown with alongside a slew of artists (COG, sleepmakewaves, Yitzhak Yedid, Katatonia, Caligula's Horse, Leprous, James Morrison, The Black Sorrows, Troy Cassar-Daley, Tim Ruiz, Art Fristoe and Woody Witt {Grammy Award Winning Jazz Musicians} to summarise an extensive list) Ben looks to further his appetite for musical development by pursing teaching, composition and performance, with the later currently taken up by original projects Kodiak Empire, Milton Man Gogh, Valtozash Big Band, Luke Dowsett, Soul Mechanics, The Ravi Welsh Trio, Found In Trees and the Ben Shannon Trio. Having performed well over 250+ gigs in 2015-2016 alone, 2017 and beyond looks extremely bright and filled with music; teaching, performing, writing and mentoring.

Ben is extremely honoured to have signed a publishing deal with Double Drummer. Double Drummer is run by ex Albert Music/BMG Chief Executive Officer Tim Prescott whose artist alumni includes AC/DC, Beyonce, Powderfinger, John Mayer and Bruce Springsteen to summarise an extensive list.

Ben was also recently accepted for a position in the Banff International Jazz Workshop, to take place in Banff, Canada in August this year. He was 1 of 48 worldwide to be accepted.

Ben also teaches in upwards of 50 students weekly. He has also recently begun studying the Tabla under the direction of guru ji Shen Flindell and looks to incorporate new found eastern styles and techniques to the drum kit and composition.

Ben’s approach to music is a holistic process that is clearly representative of everything he stands for. He wishes to share his musical aspirations with the world throughout his journey.
