Playing music is my passion and I love sharing the wonder and versatility of guitar with my students. I run lessons 6 days a week from my dedicated music room in West Pymble, Sydney. My students have acoustic guitars, nylon stringed (classical) guitars and electrics. I've been playing guitar for more than 30 years and teaching since 2012.
I take beginners through a carefully worked-out programme of chord and tab songs. Once they get to an intermediate level, they then get to choose their own music from a list of several hundred pieces which I've arranged and downloaded into Spotify playlists. I spend many hours of my week on music preparation. I encourage students to try a wide range of techniques (guitar percussion, different strumming patterns, strum-pick combos) and music genres eg. pop, rock, folk, blues, jazz and world. Students can learn to read music in tabs, notes and chords and I also prepare quite a few for external AMEB exams. For teenage students studying music as an elective, I am happy to help with prep for school performance assignments. I teach many parent-child duets (learning an instrument alongside your child is a really good bonding exercise and two people keep each other motivated to practice). Halfway through the year, I host a workshop, in which I invite an eminent guitarist to come and share his/her specialist skills with my students. At the end of the year, I hire a hall and put on a big concert in which my students get to perform, amplified, for friends and family if they wish. Most of the time, there is an opportunity for everyone to do one or two songs as a large group, which is a bit chaotic but great fun. It gives everyone the opportunity to share their love of music with like-minded friends.
