The Canberra Mandolin Orchestra brings together players of mandolin, mandola, mandocello, guitar and double bass. They keep alive the rich tradition of the mandolin groups that were so popular with thousands of amateur and professional music makers in the first couple of decades of the 20th century.
Under the musical direction of Michael Sollis, the Canberra Mandolin Orchestra’s repertoire includes ritzy tunes from the dawn of the jazz age, light classics, film themes, Italian, Irish and Australian folk tunes and popular music. The mandolin orchestra work much like a string orchestra, except that mandolins are plucked and not bowed. The orchestra meets every Tuesday evening and new players, at any level, are always welcome.
