Daniel Calder B.Mus., B.Ed.

A graduate of the Queensland University of Technology with degrees in both Music and Education, Daniel extensively studied both classical and modern voice as well as pianoforte. He is a past Queensland Champion
Tenor and studied voice under renowned Opera Australia soprano, Peta Blyth.

Daniel has a special love of choral music and is highly regarded for his work within the community choir movement in Queensland. From 1999 to 2002, Daniel conducted the renowned Blackstone-Ipswich Cambrian Choir Inc., one of the oldest community choral bodies in Australia. He is a past Musical Director of the Caloundra Chorale and Theatre Company, leading them to Queensland’s Champion Choir in 2005.

In 2005, Daniel founded The Sunshine Coast Oriana Choir. Since its inception, The Sunshine Coast Oriana Choir has performed to acclaim in Brisbane and regional Queensland, performing a wide variety of repertoire from baroque and classical oratorio to modern, contemporary choral reviews. In 2010, the Choir, accompanied by the Brisbane Symphony Orchestra, performed Mozart’s Requiem to sell out audiences in Brisbane and on the Sunshine Coast. In both 2009 and 2011, The Sunshine Coast Oriana Choir was crowned as Queensland’s Grand Champion Choir. Under Daniel’s baton, The Sunshine Coast Oriana Choir has been recorded by 4MBS FM in Brisbane and has been broadcast nationally on ABC Classic FM.

In 2012, Daniel will lead The Sunshine Coast Oriana Choir to the United Kingdom and Europe on a 16 day international tour including competing at the International Eisteddfod in Llangollen, Wales. On tour, the choir will also perform in London’s St. Paul’s Cathedral and St. Martin in the Fields, as well as venues across England, Belgium and France. The Sunshine Coast Oriana Choir, by personal invitation, will also perform for royalty in celebration of Her Majesty The Queen’s Diamond Jubilee at the Palace of Westminster, London on Monday 2 July, 2012. This performance will be broadcast around the world.

Daniel is passionate about the Eisteddfod movement within Australia and its fostering of emerging musical talent and serves as a Vice President on the Eisteddfod Council of Queensland and as an adjudicator of choral, vocal and piano eisteddfodau throughout the state.

Daniel has been recognised as one of Queensland’s leading choral conductors and is in high demand as a choral clinician, vocal coach, repetiteur and adjudicator.
