I have over 40 years of professional music performance experience and 37 years of instrumental tuition experience. I am currently tutoring Saxophone at Canberra Girls Grammar School. I also tutor in Saxophone, Clarinet, Bass Clarinet and Oboe at Campbell High School, as well as in my home studio. I have recently worked as an instrumental tutor with the Girls Jazz course at the ANU Community Music Centre, and I’m a regular tutor at the Young Music Society Summer School.
I enjoy teaching all levels of students, and although my preferred professional performance area is Jazz-based music, I teach all genres, including classical. I also very much enjoy the role of supporting students to participate in school band programs.
In my lessons I work to balance technical mastery of the physical aspects of playing with the creative and expressive aspects of musicality. I explicitly teach both aural and music reading skills to equip students to be able to handle unfamiliar pieces of music. I explicitly teach practice strategies and skills with the aim of building independence in learning. I motivate and inspire students by the use of engaging repertoire, through my own demonstrations of playing, and by playing or forwarding links to recordings and videos of the woodwind greats, past and present I always seek to encourage, acknowledging even modest improvement and building on successes. I introduce students to a wealth of online teaching content and resources.
