Derek has spent the last 30 years working as a professional singer/actor as well as teaching singing privately for the past 15 years. Most recently he appeared as ‘Monsieur Andre’ in the Australian/New Zealand tour of ‘THE PHANTOM OF THE OPERA’ with Anthony Warlow, and has played ‘Gus’ in ‘CATS’, ‘Padre Perez’ in ‘MAN OF LA MANCHA’, ‘Mary Sunshine’ in ‘CHICAGO’ (in both Australia and on London’s West End) and ‘Tobias Ragg’ in ‘SWEENEY TODD’. He also appeared in ‘GREASE’ and the original Australian cast of ‘THE SECRET GARDEN’.

Derek trained at the Elder Conservatorium in Adelaide and the Queensland Conservatorium and holds a B.Mus (performance) degree and a graduate diploma in Opera. A strong classical vocal technical background and 20 years experience performing in Professional Musical Theatre has allowed Derek to develop a solid and reliable vocal technique which will assist anyone wanting to aim for the professional stage, perfect that role for an upcoming amateur theatre company season, or even just sing as a hobby in a relaxed, positive environment. Derek has also had experience assisting people who are suffering from or recovering from vocal strain.
Derek has had students go on to work in professional productions including ‘THE PRODUCERS’, ‘CATS’, ‘THE PHANTOM OF THE OPERA’, and work for ‘The Production Company’, as well as performing roles in many Melbourne amateur theatre companies and singing in local choirs. He has also assisted several students with VCE preparation, and has helped students with auditions for WAAPA, VCA, BAPA and NIDA.
Derek can assist with breathing technique, vocal placement, vocal support, intonation, chest voice/head voice mix, repertoire advice, audition preparation, role study, aural training and basic sight reading skills.
