My name is Connor Fogarty, and I am a composer based in Adelaide. I am currently offering tuition in music composition and theory from the beginner to advanced level. I recently graduated with a PhD in music composition from the Elder Conservatorium of Music, University of Adelaide. My music has won multiple awards and has been performed and recorded by a variety of musicians and ensembles from the community to professional level both in Australia and overseas. A recent career highlight was the premiere performance of my Symphony by the Adelaide Wind Orchestra. The piece is set to receive a second performance in Gwangju, South Korea in July 2024.
My aim as a composition tutor is to tailor my approach to the needs of each individual student within the parameters the following three pillars: craft, creativity, and collaboration. Craft refers to the foundational principles that are required to be an effective composer such as harmony, counterpoint, orchestration, and analysis. Creativity involves moving beyond mere rules and conventions and exploring the student’s individual creative voice. Collaboration is about gaining practical experience by looking for opportunities to get the student’s music off the page and into the hands of performers. I also have experience as a film composer and can include this and other types of multimedia composition in my sessions if desired.
My music theory tutoring services would be ideal for high school or university students who wish to gain a greater understanding of their coursework, or for students undertaking AMEB theory. Topics I can teach include harmony, counterpoint, orchestration, music analysis, music history, and music research. I also have experience with pop and jazz theory, analysis, history, and performance through my undergraduate studies.
