Improvisation Mentoring

Improvisation is the spontaneous creation of notes in real time without prior practice or preparation.

I have released two East-meets-West recordings with Hamed Sadeghi (Eishan Ensemble), a young master of the tar (Persian lute), featuring classical piano and tar, on Bandcamp.

The course is designed to help the student master the rudiments of improvisation.

Topics covered include:

12-bar blues

Improvising over a progression of chords

Jazz harmony

Western modes

Eastern modes with a connection to world music

Free improvisation.

Prerequisite: a certain degree of technical fluency on a chosen instrument; knowledge of triads.

Players of all instruments welcome.
