Hi, thank you for visiting!
I am a working jazz bassist in Melbourne, graduated from Bachelor of Music Performance (Jazz) and Honours of Music Performance (Jazz) at Monash University.
My aim is to build fundamental double bass playing skills and am very adamant in teaching correct physical technique and posture, so that students will able to enjoyably play the double bass with minimal health issues, such as Repetitive Strain Injury. I highly recommend my techniques to those who experience pain, even arthritis, associated with bass playing. My holistic approach in playing involves incorporating the large muscle groups and adapting the natural body stance into a relaxed playing posture. It is my experience that one can produce a warm and powerful sound, and play loud, fast and for long periods of time from the most relaxed of postures.
I also cover essential ear training and music theory, and will guide students through fundamental exercises, bass lines and grooves. I am adamant in building a solid technical foundation in my students so that they will have the ability to adapt it to any playing style.
If there is that particular "sound" you are looking for, I can advise on the necessary string type, action, amp setting and playing style to suit you.
My field of basswork includes, but not limited to, jazz, blues, rockabilly, funk, pop, reggae, Afro-Cuban, Latin, hip hop and R&B.
And of course, I'm also totally flexible and am happy to work on whatever you want!
Students will eventually be able to join jams and confidently play with bands as a bassist.
I can assist in transcription of bass lines and solos.
I have studied with great local bassists Dean Addison, Ben Robertson, Frank Di Sario and Ivan Sultanoff, and with renowned international bassists Eric Revis, Yunior Terry, Mark Helias, Reuben Rogers and Vicente Archer.
I am actively involved with big bands and jazz club gigs around Melbourne, associated with Allan Browne, Tony Gould, Paul Williamson(trumpet), Aaron Choulai, Barney Mcall, Andrea Keller and Bopstretch. I have shared the stage with interenational artists such as Gerald Clayton, Terence Blanchard, Maria Schneider and Enrico Rava. I am an experienced and working music teacher in both classical and jazz fields, teaching students ranging from 4 years old up to retirees. I tailor lessons and teaching methods to suit most individuals.
I usually teach from my house in West Heidelberg on Saturdays. In some cases I can travel out to students, and charge a travel fee.
