Guitar Lessons

Hi, I'm Ian.

I have a High Performance Honours degree in Classical Guitar performance, and a Master of Music (Research) degree also in Classical Guitar from The Queensland Conservatorium of Music, Griffith University. I have a broad range of performance experience, including solo performance, chamber music, metal bands and musical theatre orchestra pits.

I primarily teach classical guitar, and will insist that children who are beggining on the instrument begin with this style. Once they have some fundamental skills achieved, I am happy to branch out into other styles.

If your child has already been learning in other styles, and has been working towards exams in RockSchool or performs in bands where these skills need further development, I am more than happy to assist and continue on that path.

If you are an adult beginner, I like to begin working from a book tilted "It's never too late... to play guitar." This is a fantastic resource that offers various styles of guitar playing and notation. It will develop the fundamentals that will allow you to move in any direction you like.

If you are an adult who has already been playing, I am happy enough to undertake any style you already play, and help help you to achieve any goals you might like to pursue.

Even though this sounds rigid, I have been teaching for some time now, and do understand that different people have different learning styles, andI can be flexible in changing direction. But we have to start somewhere, and by having these parameters at the beginning, we know where to take the next steps.

I strongly believe that a process that builds skills will lead to more enjoyable music making, and also such a process can be fun as well.
