Friendly, Professional and experienced teacher.
Craig Ryan is a drummer, percussionist, and music educator who has been sharing his love of music for decades. Born with a rhythm in his soul, Craig began drumming on paint tins with wooden spoons at the age of three and quickly captured the attention (and sometimes patience!) of everyone around him. Music became a lifelong passion, and the drums in particular have always been his instrument of choice.
Craig started his professional career at age 10 as Lead Drummer in a military band, performing at ANZAC marches etc, before moving onto the full drum kit and studying under various teachers privately, including at the Sydney Conservatorium of Music. He has also completed his Certificate of Music Teaching and Associated Diplomas for drum performance and teaching, further cementing his expertise as an educator.
After playing in several original bands around Sydney, Craig spent two years on a working holiday in England, performing as a percussionist in clubs across London and Oxford. From house bands to improvised weekly gigs with guest artists, he developed the versatility to play an astonishing range of styles — from blues, rock, jazz, funk, and Latin to reggae, country, classical, metal, and mainstream.
Back in Australia, Craig performed full-time with working bands, including The Midnight Oil Show, The Eagles Show, The A-Team, and Party Pigs, among others. He also discovered DJing during his time in London, which led to two simultaneous residencies: Bondi Hotel, The Beachcomber Hotel in Toukley.
Craig has performed and recorded with numerous acclaimed musicians, including Phil Emmanuel, Dai Pritchard, Glen Terry, Andy Thompson, Harry Brus, Gail Page, Dave Longo, Mal Eastic, Dave Bishop, Andrew Toner, Christian Marsh, Steve Edmond, and two-time Grammy Award winner Howard Levy.
For Craig, one of the greatest joys of being a musician is creating music with other artists in the recording studio — capturing those rare moments of magic that deeply resonate with listeners. His diverse experience and lifelong dedication to music continue to inspire his students and fellow performers alike.
