Jason Ji

  • Bachelor of Music

Jason Ji is a Chinese-Australian saxophonist based in Melbourne, currently undertaking his Bachelor of Music Honours (Performance) at the Melbourne Conservatorium of Music. He began playing saxophone at the age of twelve after short stints of learning piano, violin, and clarinet. His passion for the classical saxophone later developed throughout his tertiary studies with Dr. Joseph Lallo and Martin Hemingway.

Jason is an avid chamber musician, being involved in many of the Melbourne Conservatorium’s saxophone quartets, including Odyssey Saxes, 4AM Saxophone Quartet, and now the Ocean Saxophone Quartet. His chamber groups have attended and performed at various international saxophone events, including the Asia Pacific Saxophone Academy in Bangkok (2019), the Singapore Saxophone Symposium (2019), as well as performing annually at the Melbourne International Saxophone Festival. In 2023, he along with Ocean Saxophone Quartet won the Conservatorium’s Chamber Music Competition. He has also seen regular performances with the Melbourne Conservatorium’s Concert Band, Wind Symphony and Saxophone Ensemble, as well as the Australian New Goldberg Orchestra.

As a Beijing-born saxophonist, Jason loves exploring aspects of Chinese identity through sharing music written by composers of Chinese heritage. It is his goal to bring this music, as well as classical music in general to wider audiences, in order to express thoughts, ideas, and create experiences that cannot be expressed through words alone.
