Bachelor of Music Performance
My name is Jessica Carlton and I am a trumpet, violin, and piano teacher currently accepting students in Fremantle or surrounding areas.
I have recently moved to Perth from Melbourne where I have been teaching trumpet, violin, and ensembles at Northside Christian College since 2017. Prior to that, I spent two years in the United States teaching jazz trumpet, music theory, and instructing jazz ensembles at the New Jersey Performing Arts Centre, as well as teaching music theory at a short program at the New England Conservatory in Boston called Jazz Lab.
My experience in teaching ranges from primary school students (including pre primary) to secondary school students (including grade 12 students preparing for university). Additionally, I have five years of experience in teaching individual lessons in a private setting to students aged 3 to older adults.
Alongside my teaching experience, I have almost 10 years of experience as a child care provider in different family settings in Australia and the United States, including care for children with intellectual and physical disabilities. This experience has provided me with an opportunity to gain extra skills in dealing with children of all ages, and of different and individual needs. These skills have helped immensely in my various roles as a teacher.
My own education includes completing high school at a prestigious music and dance school in Melbourne called the Victorian College of the Arts Secondary School where I studied classical violin and trumpet. I went on to complete a Bachelor of Music Performance in jazz trumpet at Monash University, Sir Zelman Cowen School of Music. There, I was awarded the Sir Zelman Cowen Jazz Prize, open to all performance students, in my second year. In my final year, I composed and recorded an album under my name entitled ‘Not Alone’. For this album, I was nominated for ‘Young Australian Jazz Artist of the Year’ at the prestigious Bell Awards.
If you are interested in lessons as a beginner or intermediate student, I would love to become a part of your music education and development!
