---Teaching Philosophy and Methodology: Master the Violin with Proven Methods---
Are you a passionate violinist that wants to play like a pro, but don’t quite know the path to get there? Whether your goal is to excel in exams and auditions, secure a music scholarship, gain admission to a music conservatoire, or you're an adult rediscovering your love of violin and eager to master the grand violin concertos, I can show you a clear and proven path to enhance your skills and achieve your musical goals.
My teaching approach is akin to a doctor’s practice: I begin by identifying the core issues that might be limiting your potential. From there, I prescribe specific exercises, practice techniques, and studies designed to enhance and refine your technique. This method ensures that even a modest amount of daily practice can lead to quick progress. This process gives predictably consistent and excellent results that are easy for anyone to attain no matter how “talented”, just by attempting the exercises. Once you work in this way you realize that anyone can be “talented” if they just do the right things. Practice becomes easy because all you have to do is follow the exercises and improvement happens. This is why I can confidently say you'll experience distinct improvements after just one lesson—it's what consistently happens.
Every aspect of violin playing, from tone production—a crucial element often overlooked—to intonation, can be demystified and taught in clear, logical steps. For example, intonation basics involves playing any E, A, D, or G notes matching and precisely compared to their corresponding open strings. The other notes have flexibility depending on the key, but all notes are ultimately relative to the open strings. With a clear understanding of these foundational theories, you gain an invaluable roadmap to evaluate your playing, and the exercises and studies become the vehicle to travel this route effectively. In addition to these, I am developing an app for violin practice which makes practice even easier and more fun.
---Biography: From Performance to Pedagogy---
John began learning the violin at age five, soon winning multiple music scholarships and completing grade eight with distinction at thirteen. From 2002 to 2007 John was leader of several youth orchestras and played with the National Youth Orchestra of Great Britain. His performances have included tours in Italy, major concert halls in the UK, playing live at the BBC proms under Sir Colin Davis and as soloist with the Cheltenham Philharmonic Orchestra.
After studying at the Birmingham Conservatoire of Music, where he led the orchestra, John went on to study at the world-renowned Guildhall School of Music and Drama with internationally celebrated violin pedagogue Simon Fischer. This experience ignited John's profound interest in violin pedagogy, shaping his approach to teaching.
Drawing from over a decade and a half of teaching experience, both in schools and privately across the UK and Australia, and having owned a recording studio, John has become a sought-after violin pedagogue known for his emphasis on technical finesse. He is currently focused on creating innovative teaching materials for violinists and developing a violin app to enhance learning experiences.
