Adults and children - from Bach to Burt Bacharach, Blondie and Baby Shark! Be inspired with a specialist piano teacher who brings out your best – integrate finger ergonomics, read music with ease, theory, and play by ear – all elements work together to be a top-line beginner, second time rounder, amateur or professional musician. Learn the lot, be coached with ease, not half learn.
PIANO METHOD – I impart skills so you gain confidence and play with style - classical, musicals, rock and pop songs that you love. Your training is based on foundation classical traditions the way Mozart and Chopin learnt, delivered in 2025 easy language, that you apply, to bring out exquisite expressive qualities. Beginners to advanced.
WHY and HOW TO LEARN - For your own indulgent leisure, or gear for soirees with friends, performances, eisteddfods, exams, or any of the above. Go at your own pace, easy going or accelerated. The IMPORTANT THING is to learn DEVELOPMENTALLY, that is, I'll help motivate you to develop as an all-rounder in music – integrate piano, music, theory, aural – once in the groove, enjoy daily, cerebral, music and artistic intention to unwind the day, no matter what age. I recommend immersing yourself in 4 to 6 practices per week (1 to 2 practices means students tend to ‘limp’ along), 3 practices allows fair progress; whilst serious lovers of piano (all levels) are at it every day, to gain serious ‘intellectual music and muscle memory’ - so by year 3 to 4, you can almost instantly pick up most pieces of pop music and easy Chopin, Tchaikovsky classics, and read and play at a whim. Yep, just gotta stick at it a few years - like tennis, golf, karate, chess – the more time and strategic practice effort, the stronger your advance and greater satisfaction.
PIANO – FUN, EDUCATIONAL LESSONS based on the most effective music learning methods. I have 30 years of teaching experience. Coaching for hobby, St Cecilia’s, AMEB, Trinity College London, ABRSM and HSC exams.
Schools where I have taught piano: UNSW, Central Coast Conservatorium, The King's School, St Aloysius' College, and Abbotsford Public School.
Accompanist for Directions in Music (9 years), Annual Schools’ Concerts and AMEB exams: North Sydney Public School, Willoughby PS, Woollahra PS, South Coogee PS.
Over 15 years (from age 9), I learnt from Sydney Conservatorium renowned pianist lecturers, Elizabeth Powell, Head of Piano, Lyall Duke and Josephine Bell. I attended more than 100 piano teaching and repertoire courses from age 18 to 35, from international and Australian pedagogues. Alexander Technique studies with Janet Davies enables me to teach highly specialised ergonomics which when mastered, allows playing with ease, alleviates tension and helps to maintain good joint and muscle health. I identify incorrect wrist and finger positions which create tiredness, pain and harsh thumping. Premium skills coaching in how to truly make the piano 'sing'.
THINGS YOU SHOULD KNOW – Piano
PIANO OR KEYBOARD? Students learn faster on a traditional ‘real’ upright piano which produces a beautiful singing tone - felt hammers strike long metal strings, and gives a tactile pleasure to fully develop your finger sensitivity and aural. Keyboards are okay for the short term but once you compare pre-recorded electronic sounds to human made live real piano sounds, it’s chalk and cheese. Call Julie to discuss the differences! Advanced students best on upright and grand pianos.
ADULTS LEARNING – With a bit of determination, untap your musical potential and artistry. Unwind after work and on the weekend with piano. Study your favourite pieces of TV, musicals, film music, Frank Sinatra, rock and pop, from 1940s to 2025, and some classical.
CHILDREN – FOUNDATION WORK, be assisted by a teacher to gain good skills, and surreptitiously works to instil a good attitude and practice work ethic for success – delivered in a fun way - which usually goes unnoticed by the child!!
Once you get a few pieces you love under your belt, spur yourself on to build a play list. Schedule in 4 to 6 practices a week to make good progress. Three practices per week is do-able for steady progress, but not as efficient to develop 'muscle memory' and make fast progress. The more days per week of practice - of specifically, smart and clever practice - your life journey of continual music making satisfaction begins.
For all, try and stick at the piano for about 4 years, the reward is gaining an artistic life skill. I teach students for 4, 8 and 10 years, this makes learning, progress and the method consistent and uninterrupted, Most students need 8 to 10 years to become a good 8th grader or piano diploma candidate.
