Lara has been teaching singing for over 15 years. She has had a variety of students in that time, ranging in age from as young as 5 through to women in their 60's. She is passionate about teaching and thrives on watching the transition and progress of her students.
As every person has different objectives, voices, and abilities, each student is catered to individually.
Lara teaches a variety of genres, including musical theatre, pop, contemporary, and jazz. With extensive technical training in musical theatre and classical, she has been able to adapt to almost any genre.
She has also received training for performance from speech pathologists and voice coaches, and in addition, has undertaken tertiary studies in speech and language communication and pathology. This has enabled a comprehensive and well-rounded approach to both singing technique and vocal health, ensuring the correct foundations are lain for a happy and healthy voice, long term.
Lara also incorporates her own professional performance experience into her lessons where applicable, to help nurture song interpretation, understand performance expectations, and build a confident and individual performance style.
Lara participated in her first musical “Oliver” when she was 9, and from there it was love. Dabbling in violin, guitar and piano for a number of years, it was singing that permeated. She juggled school life with singing lessons, music nights, vocal groups, choirs and musicals. She performed in shows such as “Annie”, “The King and I”, “Into The Woods”, “Godspell”, "Pippin" and “Evie and The Birdman”.
Beyond school, Lara spent a year studying Musical Theatre at the Australian Institute of Music, followed by a Bachelor of Creative Arts (Performance) at the University of Wollongong. Here Lara studied classical technique and voice studies under speech pathologists and industry professionals, which enabled her to expand her skills and capabilities. During these years of training, she worked with and met numerous actors, singers, teachers, directors, coaches, and musicians who helped create the performer and teacher she is today.
While studying, Lara taught singing and piano, and performed both in and out of university. Her performance life has seen her work extend to graduation ceremony entertainment, art spaces and galleries, acoustic duo's and trio's, as a wedding singer, corporate and function band singer, as a backing vocalist, a recording and live vocalist for a selection of DJ’s including Lancelot and Klue, as a session singer for a variety of advertising campaigns, as a vocalist for the Bondi Hipsters, as a performer for “Santa’s Angels”, and as a member of the corporate entertainers “The Margaritas”.
To complement her undergraduate studies, Lara has since completed a Diploma in Speech and Language Communication and has also undertaken studies in Speech Pathology.
Lara relocated to the Byron Bay region from Sydney 4 years ago.
