Congratulations on investigating music lessons! Music is a beautiful enrichment to life.
I offer individualised violin and viola lessons to students who have a range of ages and skills. I have developed my own sequence of material for beginners. As students progress, I like to support their musical interests by tailoring the material studied to each individual whilst keeping in mind my responsibility to expose them to a broad range of music and technical skills. It is important to sequentially build technique and develop appropriate posture as well as to enjoy playing the violin and the music being played.
As a teacher, I love being part of students' increasing skill and confidence with their instrument. Exposing students to the wonderful world of music is very special. Of course it is not easy to learn the violin and the students who make the best progress are those who commit to regular practice sessions. Exams can be helpful in focusing students and I have prepared many students for exams (AMEB, Trinity Guildhall, NSW HSC) as well as various auditions.
Gaining experience in performance is also very important and I encourage students to perform as much as possible. I organise two main studio concerts each year in which every student is offered the chance to perform a solo as well as to play in a piece with everyone. I encourage students to participate in group music making activities such as orchestras, choirs and other ensembles where possible. This exposes students to important ensemble skills as well as being pleasurable and inspiring.
Lessons are basically organised around the Victorian government school terms. Beginners start with a weekly individual lesson of 30 minutes. Around AMEB 2nd grade level, students move to an individual 45-minute lesson and around AMEB 5th grade level, students move to an individual 60-minute lesson. Opportunities for occasional group lessons and workshops arise as appropriate throughout the year.
