Described as a "consummate professional", I believe in teaching for excellence but in a creative manner that reinforces learning with understanding. Due to covid-19, lessons are currently online (individual and in real-time), which means that you can be located anywhere. I'm also performing online concerts. Online lessons work well even for advanced students and I help with set-up. Face-to-face lessons will return in 2022, along with a summer program of my concerts in the Lugarno/Peakhurst studio. I welcome committed students for ongoing study/regular lessons (payment is weekly and not upfront for the whole term). Levels taught are from early intermediate through to advanced and diploma (adults, teenagers and children over age 7+ ). Sydney Conservatorium Open Academy teaching will resume in 2022.

I have a current WWCC and am experienced in teaching both children and adults. I've also had excellent results teaching students presenting with performance anxiety. My curriculum (whether for exams or improvement of musical skills) is based on excellent performance practice standards. For committed students, it develops quality skills, creativity, effective practice strategies and a growing sense of independent learning and learning with understanding (where relevant). This ensures superior student achievements not only for all forms of external assessment but as a skill that will be retained for life in a healthy manner.

If you'd like to learn with me in 2021, the best way to arrange a first lesson time is to email my team on management@mariawelna.com or to text 0433309707. Minimum lesson duration is 60 minutes to ensure appropriate skill development. Please include information such as your previous piano background/level, repertoire played and location (where relevant).

BIO/TEACHING PHILOSOPHY

My musical pedigree can be traced to world-renowned music conservatories, and a long list of distinguished concert artists/professors from Europe and the U.S.A Furthermore, as a performance practice specialist, I myself specialise in the golden age of pianism and its concert-virtuoso tradition.

I hold Bachelor and Master's degrees in performance from the K. Szymanowski Music Academy in Katowice (the alma mater of Krystian Zimerman) and the Sydney Conservatorium of Music. I also have teaching qualifications (for teaching instrumental music in primary and secondary music schools), wide education experience and pedagogical knowledge. I've taught advanced piano in selective music schools for gifted children in Europe, maintained a piano studio in Australia, taught voice and acted as a music director/répétiteur for many years, completed a postgraduate ‘Principles of Studio Pedagogy’ unit at the Sydney Conservatorium and have experience as a piano adjudicator/examiner within NSW and ACT (at all levels i.e. from P Plate piano to 8th grade AMEB as well as Certificate of Performance). I teach piano at the Sydney Conservatorium Open Academy, am a member of the Accompanists’ Guild of NSW and have maintained membership of the Music Teachers' Association of NSW for some years.

My more than eleven years of instrumental pedagogy experience (all as a tertiary degree qualified performer and teacher), professional industry experience and strong performance background ensures that I teach students excellent performance practice skills in an organised, reliable and kind manner (relating well to all age groups). I already have 16 years of performance experience as a concert pianist and chamber musician at elite levels, and almost 26 years of experience with music/performance. I’m experienced with exam syllabuses such as AMEB, ABRSM, Trinity College London. I have given guest lectures at the tertiary level and lecture/recitals within my fields of expertise. I am familiar with the classroom music curriculum (particularly HSC Music 2/Extension and its performance component). During my own high school years in Australia, I was a music scholarship student at a selective music school (for piano, voice, violin, pipe organ, composition) contributing to school life through many selective ensemble, solo performance and accompaniment commitments.

My teaching philosophy focuses on an individual approach to each student, fostering musicality, a love of repertoire and interpretive insight through every step of the learning process. I also teach students to value healthy technique (which is not only about proficiency but also encompasses tone production, phrasing, stylistic refinement and musicianship), musical understanding and performance temperament. I also offer one-on-one piano professional development for musicians, piano, voice and instrumental teachers. Please see the PD section for more details.

For online lessons: you can be located anywhere. Studio location is in Lugarno/Peakhurst for face-to-face lessons in 2022 and during the summer holidays. For students outside this area, I also teach at the Sydney Conservatorium Open Academy during term time. I welcome regular students who are committed to their piano studies. Exam, diploma, audition, competition preparation may be offered for suitable long-term students but is not compulsory.
