Course Description

This course is for students who wish to fast-track their understanding of course subjects stated. The course touches on the main music creating process of song/composition arrangement, lyric writing, sound design and mixing. Students are encouraged to work on their own compositions from any genre.

(1) The private tuition is tailored to the individual students needs and particular interests.

(2) Students will be guided through the music making process, from initial concept to a finished composition/song, fully arranged with the main production elements in place;

(3) Students are encouraged to present their original creative ideas in their chosen DAW, to be reviewed by the tutor on a weekly basis for constructive feedback - complimented by practical insights around composition and production techniques to achieve their musical intent;

(4) Students will analyse existing works by artists in their chosen genre, to identify the key characteristics and idioms reflective in those genre and apply them to their own work.

(5) This includes reviewing the structural, compositional and production elements (incorporating audio engineering techniques) to achieve the aesthetics of their genre;

(6) In taking the time to study these aspects, students can learn to identify the most important elements and set up parameters for their own compositions to help improve their efficiency and output;

Learning Outcomes

Support and expand their learnings in the classroom, and introduce them to additional techniques for application to their own works.

(1) Apply critical listening skills to identify key compositional and production elements of their composition.

(2) Set appropriate parameters in their creative process to help focus their ideas and improve output efficiency – critical when working to deadlines.

(3) Help create and develop their own creative workflows practices.

(4) Provide them with the tools and confidence to begin self-analysing their own work, the creative decisions they are making, and encourage them to expand and explore learnings outside the classroom.

(5) Give students a deeper understanding of software plugins that effect the dynamic, frequency, spatial elements, and how they are used to balance and tonally shape the song.

(6) Give students an insight into some of the Virtual Instrument plugins that were applied eg. Spectrasonics, Spitfire Audio, EZ Drummer, Native Instruments, Output.
