Mathew Bell

Yo! I’m a songwriter, composer, producer, and multi-instrumentalist from the Gold Coast, Australia.

My music journey first began when I was a kid listening to the Beatles and Beach Boys’ respective greatest hits CDs on my little boombox. I didn’t know it at the time, but I was on a musical path and there was nothing I could do about it.

The first instrument I played was drums at around age 10 and I learned to play them by copying Mick Fleetwoods (of Fleetwood Mac (go figure)) beats. I stopped playing for a couple of years because I got a drum teacher who tried to get me to do rudiments and I was not interested in things that could actually help me improve.

Several years later, I was ready to get back in the game. Literally in the game. I begged my Dad to buy me Guitar Hero for Christmas, and instead he bought me an acoustic guitar. And while I was able to initially stifle my disappointment, I started learning anyway, and this quickly grew into a very real passion and was the final nail in the coffin for what I’d eventually make my career.

I’ve now completed a Bachelor of Contemporary Music (majoring in Composition and Production), learnt to play 4 different instruments (going for 5 now), joined a barbershop choir, performed in a multitude of bands, handed a CD of my demos to Steve Albini in person, performed at Crafted Beer & Cider Festival, produced multiple singles, and wrote/produced/mixed my own bands’ EP.
