Michael Gibson

I am a freelance cellist with extensive experience performing and teaching in a range of different settings. In September of this year, I will be returning to Brisbane following a year of postgraduate study in Hamburg, Germany.

I have taught as a private cello tutor at schools in Brisbane including Good News Lutheran School, Westside Christian College and St John’s Anglican College, as well as at the Altona Gymnasium (high school) in Hamburg. In addition I was a tutor at the Queensland state schools MOST orchestral music camp, and previous to that an assistant with the Westside Suburbs String Orchestra for a year.

As a performer I have played with various groups including the Queensland Symphony Orchestra, Ensemble Q, and the Australian Youth Orchestra; I have also performed at various festivals throughout Europe and North America.

I teach students at all levels with a focus on developing fluency and autonomy of note reading, technical ease of playing and attention to creating a beautiful and shaped sound. I have successful experience entering students in AMEB exams, but can also prepare students for different syllabuses or auditions and competitions.
