I have 15 years of teaching experiences and have taught students at all age groups. I not only undertake general teaching tasks, but also try to develop students’ appreciation of music through practical skills and encourage them to expand their interests in music.
*Biography
Flutist Michelle Kim is a distinguished graduate of the Schulich School of Music at McGill University, where she earned a Bachelor of Music in Flute Performance and Music Theory, studying under the guidance of Montreal Symphony Principal Flutist Timothy Hutchins. She enriched her musical education further through an exchange program at the Sibelius Academy (Sibelius-Akatemia) in Helsinki, Finland, under Professor Mikael Helasvuo. Michelle has also holds a Master of Secondary Teaching from Griffith University, Australia, combining her performance expertise with a strong foundation in music pedagogy.
Beginning her musical journey in Seoul with piano lessons at five, Michelle's passion for music flourished, leading her to commence flute studies at twelve. Just three years later, at the age of fifteen, she was appointed principal flutist of the London Youth Symphony. Michelle has been a member of the National Youth Band of Canada and the McGill Symphony Orchestra, and during her time in Helsinki, she performed with various ensembles including Helsinki University Orchestra, NYKY Ensemble, Academy Winds and the Academy’s Opera orchestra. With numerous prizes from the Canadian Music Competition and the Kiwanis Music Festival, Michelle has performed concertos with professional orchestras, showcasing her exceptional talent and dedication to musical excellence. She also had the opportunity to work with renowned artists such as Emmanuel Pahud, Susan Hoeppner, and Richard Lapointe at Le Domaine Forget Music Academy.
Michelle’s extensive performance experience informs her teaching philosophy as she shares her passion and expertise with students of all ages, nurturing the next generation of musicians. With over fifteen years of teaching experience, she has taught more than a hundred private students across Canada, Korea, and Australia, ranging from young beginners to adult learners. Michelle not only teaches instrumental technique and musicianship but also fosters each student’s appreciation and curiosity for music.
Each year, she organises an annual student concert, providing her students with the opportunity to perform, celebrate their progress, and develop confidence on stage. She has also led youth orchestras and flute choirs, creating collaborative and inspiring ensemble experiences. Michelle finds teaching as fascinating and rewarding as performing, and she is dedicated to nurturing a lifelong love of music in every student.
