Miriam Joy Briggs is a pianist, educator, and community musician based in Yackandandah, North East Victoria. She holds a Bachelor of Music (Pianoforte, 2005) and a Bachelor of Teaching (2008) from The University of Melbourne. During her studies, she trained under Glen Riddle and attended classes with Max Cooke, Dr Roger Woodward, and Dr Ronald Farren Price, shaping her artistic and pedagogical foundations.
With more than two decades of teaching experience, Miriam has taught piano since 2003 and classroom music and children’s choirs since 2009. She is the founder of BAM — Briggswood Academy of Music, a vibrant studio dedicated to quality, joyful music education. Her teaching philosophy centres on strong technical foundations, creative freedom, self confidence, and community connection, with a particular passion for providing excellent music education to “country kids.” Her students perform regularly in BAM concerts and have achieved success in local eisteddfods and piano competitions.
Deeply engaged in the cultural life of North East Victoria, Miriam contributes widely to community music through accompanying, children’s choirs, drumming groups, the Yackandandah Folk Festival parade, and civic performances including ANZAC Day, Christmas Carols, and other local events.
As a performer, Miriam is drawn to the expressive worlds of Romantic, Impressionist, and jazz-influenced repertoire. Although the piano is often a solitary instrument, she delights in musical collaboration — from piano duets, small ensembles and accompanying to concerto work. Beyond the studio and stage, she enjoys paragliding, gardening, nature, and art.
