Peter Handsworth – Clarinetist | Conductor | Educator
Dr. Peter Handsworth is an internationally acclaimed clarinetist, conductor, and educator with over three decades of experience in performance and music education. He is currently Director of Performance Music and Events at Redlands College and an examiner for the Australian Music Examinations Board. His teaching career spans institutions including Monash University, the Elder Conservatorium, and the Hochschule für Musik Karlsruhe (Germany), where he served as Professor of Clarinet.
Peter specializes in clarinet and woodwind instruction, chamber music, ensemble direction, and performance psychology. He has led curriculum development at the tertiary level and mentored emerging musicians through postgraduate research supervision. His innovative teaching methods draw from a wealth of experience as a soloist, orchestral player, and recording artist, including work with the Queensland and Adelaide Symphony Orchestras.
A graduate of the University of Adelaide and Hochschule für Musik Karlsruhe, Peter completed a PhD focused on Alfred Uhl’s 48 Etüden für Klarinette. His performances include premieres of contemporary works across Europe, Asia, and the Americas. Deeply committed to musical excellence and student development, Peter brings a holistic, inspiring approach to every lesson—tailoring instruction to suit each learner’s journey.
