Rachael Thoms is one of a new breed of truly versatile singers. Accomplished in both jazz and classical performance, she graduated from the Australian National University of Music with a BMus Jazz Performance degree with First Class Honours in Classical Performance and a Master of Music majoring in Classical Performance with multiple awards and scholarships under her belt.
Rachael is currently working at the ANU School of Music as Associate Lecturer - Voice, Jazz & Contemporary Performance and teaches classical voice in the School's pre-tertiary performance course. She regularly sits on examination and audition panels for both Jazz and Classical streams, and is a sought-after private teacher, singing voice specialist and freelance musician/performer. Rachael is a certified voice science 'nerd' and member of several national and international multidisciplinary voice associations.
She is a passionate teacher delivering a considered mix of vocal pedagogy, performance techniques, music theory, improvisation techniques and music business fundamentals. Her voice training philosophy is closely aligned with the teaching of Janice Chapman's STS Model, the Estill Voice Training Method, and Accent Method Breathing and the Bel Canto tradition. Rachael is a curious and motivated educator. She remains informed and well-versed in current scholarly and scientific research related to the voice by regularly attending Voice Science conferences, symposiums and frequently engaging in professional development activities.
