Holds a Bachelor of Music (Performance) from the Sydney Conservatorium of Music, University of Sydney.

Provides opportunity to perform in student concerts at the end of Term 2 and Term 4 of each year.

Fees: $55 per 30 mins; $82.50 per 45 mins; $110 per hour.
Availability: Tuesday 1-7pm; Wednesday 3:30-7pm; Thursday 1-7pm

Raphael began learning trumpet at the age of eight with Catherine Walmsley and mentored by Peter Walmsley (OAM) in Willoughby Junior Band and later in the Symphonic Wind Band at Barker College. He has recently completed a Bachelor of Music (Performance) degree at the Sydney Conservatorium of Music (SCM), studying with Leanne Sullivan (Principal Trumpet, Australian Brandenburg Orchestra). He has also studied with Paul Terracini, Bruce Hellmers, Fabian Russell, Geoffrey Payne, Paul Goodchild, Owen Morris and John Foster.

In 2014 Raphael obtained his AMusA in Trumpet, has won many local competitions since and is the current Australian Open Soprano Cornet Champion; NSW Open Trumpet, Open Flugelhorn, Open Soprano Cornet Champion and also the 2023 winner of North Shore Wind Symphony’s (NSWS) Concerto Competition. In 2024 he will perform Arutunian’s Trumpet Concerto with NSWS.

Raphael plays Principal Trumpet in the Ku-ring-gai Philharmonic Orchestra (KPO) and the Australian Indian Orchestra (AIO), and Soprano Cornet with the Willoughby City Band (WCB). He regularly performs with many other ensembles, including invitational ensembles such as Pacific Brass, Victoria Brass & Modést Orchestra. Some recent performance highlights include: Symphony of Lights with AIO (November 2023); Böhme’s Brass Sextet with Brent Grapes (Associate Principal Trumpet of SSO, November 2023); Brandt’s Concertpiece No. 1 in an SCM masterclass with Jeroen Berwaerts (International Soloist, September 2023); Verdi’s Requiem with KPO (September 2023); Sydney to Mumbai with AIO (August 2023); and fanfare trumpet in the offstage Banda in Opera Australia’s production of Verdi’s Aïda (June/July 2023).

In 2024, Raphael is looking forward to studying with leading professionals, auditioning for major orchestral positions in Australia & abroad, performing at both the Australian and New Zealand National Band Championships, and performing Mahler’s Symphony No. 2 with KPO on 17 March.
