I have had the joy of teaching students of all ages, abilities and goals. I believe that everyone learns in different ways, and it is important to tailor lessons and styles of teaching to the student.
I always offer one free “trial lesson”, but this first lesson often runs as more of a getting-to-know-you session. I like to have the student play for me as much as possible so I can see what their playing is like at that point in time. Then we have a conversation about what their goals are and what they would like to get out of lessons. After this, I can make a structured lesson plan that I feel will suit the student.
My main goal for teaching is to inspire a life-long love for music. The most important part of lessons is the make sure that the student is enjoying the music they are playing, and have an understanding of how the music is going to help them improve. Sometimes as musicians we have to play things we don’t want to! (scales and technical work…) So I always have open conversations with my students on why these need to be done, and how this applies to their pieces.
