Ruth Thomas

  • BMUS (performance) from UWA
  • MMTA (WA Music Teachers Association)

Since 2009 Ruth has worked as an educator to develop the skills and artistry of young musicians. Based in the Western Classical Music tradition, her teaching philosophy is centred on fostering a love and appreciation of music, and using strengths-based pedagogy to develop the technical and artistic skills of young musicians.

Ruth's students have successfully auditioned for music scholarships at Perth Modern SHS, John Curtin College, and Rossmoyne SHS, as well as places in the government SIMS Gifted and Talented programs. Ruth supports students through AMEB exams, and encourages performances in local eisteddfods and competitions. In 2023 her students placed first in the 8th grade and 3rd grade woodwind sections of the Fremantle Eisteddfod.

Ruth studied flute under Michael Howell and Neil Fissenden whilst completing a Bachelor of Music (performance) at the University of Western Australia. Specialising in the performance of contemporary classical music for flute, Ruth performs both as a solo artist and as part of ensembles in Perth (Boorloo), Western Australia. Dedicated to the creation of new music, Ruth commissions music from Australian composers and premieres new repertoire for solo flute and flute ensemble.

Ruth is an accredited member of the WA Music Teachers Association and holds a current Working With Children Check.
