What is Suzuki method?
The Suzuki method of teaching was developed by Dr Suzuki of Japan using the same philosophy used as a child would learn to speak their native language from their parents.
Quoted from the Suzukimusic.org.au website:
When a child learns to speak, the following factors are at work:
Step by step mastery
The Suzuki system works with younger children since it does not require them to read notes first, just like you don’t teach a two year old to read before you teach them to speak. Teaching students to read music will come later on when their minds mature enough and when they have started to have reading ability.

How is Suzuki method different to the usual methods taught in Australia?
Like any methodology applied to any sort of instrument or learning, there are always going to be varying interpretations and results from different teachers. When it comes to music teachers, most Australian music teachers will be trained in the ‘English/Conservatorium’ style of teaching methodology of note reading that is reflected in the teaching and examination requirements of the Australian Music Examinations Board.
Suzuki based teachers in Australia will then be teachers who have then studied and adopted the Suzuki philosophy to their approach to educating their students on how to play instruments. In Australia there are many successful piano players and teachers who have come through the Suzuki training and there are also successful piano players and teachers who teach and learn using the ‘English/Conservatorium’ style of teaching.
Suzuki Australian facilitates their own level based exams and are not affiliated with the Australian Music Examinations Board. Both styles of exams are beneficial to students who are interested in exams, it is a matter of choosing which is more appropriate.
Both methods have their varying successes and obvious points of differences so it is highly advisable to call Shine Music School on 96879978 and make an appointment to talk to one of our teachers to discuss which method of teaching is most applicable to you or your child.
