Sarah at SJS Music in Upwey, Melbourne offers tuition in piano, guitar, songwriting and music theory for all ages. With a background in psychology as well as music, Sarah also offers a tailored approch for students coping with anxiety, depression or other issues which may affect their practise and experience of their lessons.
Sarah is a composer, performer, teacher and counsellor. She has studied classical, jazz and popular music on piano and guitar, as well as songwriting and composition at Box Hill Institute and Australian Catholic University. With an interest in the effect of music on the mind, she holds a Bachelor of Arts(Psychology) degree with a double minor in music and in counselling. She also holds a Diploma of Music (Composition) and is of Grade 8 AMEB standard (classical piano.)
Sarah has played keyboards in Made in Purple, the Australian Deep Purple Tribute band. She is also a singer and released her own progressive-rock album in 2014, "Looking Over My Shoulder" (www.sarahjean.bandcamp.com). Currently Sarah performs keyboards in jazz/funk/blues band the Skylarks, based in the Dandenong Ranges of Melbourne. Sarah has also composed works for classical groups including string quartets and wind quintets, and is currently working on writing for film and video games.
As a music teacher, Sarah has worked from home privately for ten years and has also worked at local primary schools including the Patch Primary School, Ferntree Gully North and Carrington Primary School.
As a counsellor, Sarah has worked in the mental health field for 2 years for organisations such as Mind Australia, Mentis Assist and Each Community Access Services. As a mental health worker Sarah provided emotional support as well as helping her clients to achieve their recovery goals.
Sarah is passionate about music and teaching the whole person.
